Slab vs Crawl Space: How Your Foundation Affects Flooring Choices
What is under your floor matters as much as what goes on top. In Williamson County you will find both slab-on-grade homes and homes over crawl spaces.
Homes over a crawl space
- Usually have plywood or OSB subfloors, which accept nail-down solid hardwood.
- Crawl space moisture matters. A vapor barrier on the ground, working vents or encapsulation, and good drainage help keep floors flat.
- Cupping across a whole floor can be a sign of crawl space humidity.
Homes on a slab
- Concrete can wick moisture, so slab readings should be tested before install.
- Engineered wood (glued or floating), LVP, laminate, and tile are common choices.
- Solid hardwood over a slab usually needs a plywood subfloor system, adding height and cost.
- Slabs should be flat; leveling compound may be needed.
Upper floors
Upper levels typically have wood subfloors, so most flooring types work. Noise between floors can be reduced with the right underlayment.
Ask your installer
Ask what moisture test they use, what barrier or underlayment is included, and how they will handle height changes at doors and stairs.
